Georgian Railway rejects talks on renewing Russia rail route
Georgian Railway has stated that Georgia is not planning to resume railway connections with Russia, according to a statement published on the company’s Facebook page.
“Georgian Railway is not discussing the resumption of railway transport between Russia and Georgia,” the company said, adding through its press service that there are currently no reasons to make the issue a matter of public discussion.
Earlier, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk said that Moscow is considering restoring transport links between the two countries through the territory of Abkhazia. According to him, efforts are underway to unblock disrupted transport routes across the Caucasus, including the possible reopening of railway communication between Russia and Georgia via Abkhazia.
Overchuk emphasized that restoring the route forms part of a broader objective aimed at strengthening transport and logistics connectivity in the region, which he described as critically important for peace, stability, and economic prosperity for the peoples of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Iran, Türkiye, and Russia.
On Friday, February 13, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili also stated that Tbilisi has had no communication with Moscow regarding the possible restoration of railway services.
Direct railway traffic between Georgia and Russia has remained suspended since 2006.
