Iran's MFA says US continues indirect talks through Pakistani mediation
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has stated that contacts with the United States are continuing through Pakistan, with both sides exchanging several messages following talks in Islamabad.
He said the two sides have exchanged numerous messages since the Iranian delegation returned, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.
According to him, a visit by Pakistani officials to Tehran is likely, intended “to discuss the views of both sides” as part of follow-up diplomatic efforts.
“We entered negotiations to end the war, secure Iran’s rights and obtain war reparations,” Baghaei said.
He added that Iran’s position is “clearly stated ” and stressed that the country’s nuclear programme serves “peaceful purposes.”
Baghaei said decisions on specific elements of any agreement cannot be made until an overall framework has been agreed.
“As long as the overall framework of an understanding is not agreed, one cannot speak about accepting or rejecting its details,” he stressed.
He also said that Western media assumptions “cannot be confirmed” and insisted that Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy under the Non-Proliferation Treaty is “inherent and cannot be taken away.”
At the same time, he noted that the level and type of uranium enrichment “can be discussed within the framework of the country’s needs.”
