Iran, Türkiye collaborate on arms embargo against Israel

28 October 2024 14:22

Iran and Türkiye are actively negotiating with several nations to impose a ban on arms supplies to Israel.

Esmail Baghaei, the spokesman of the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced the initiative during a press conference, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

“We have brought up the issue of imposing an arms embargo for discussion at the level of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Negotiations are ongoing with several other Islamic countries, including our country and Türkiye, to impose an arms embargo on the Zionist regime [Israel],” Baghaei stated.

He affirmed hope that many countries would join the effort to prevent Israel from using supplied weapons to continue what he termed the “genocide in Gaza and Lebanon.”

On October 18, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized the need for a UN-imposed arms embargo against Israel during a meeting with foreign ministers from Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Armenia in Istanbul.

Consequently, on October 24, at a gathering in Kazan under the BRICS Plus/Outreach-format meeting, Erdogan urged participants and partners to support Ankara's proposal.
