Iranian diplomat says sanctions removal key to nuclear talks
Spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baqaei, has emphasised that any negotiations concerning Iran’s nuclear program must lead to the removal of sanctions and the normalisation of its trade relations.
In a press briefing, Baqaei stated that Iran’s main demand in ongoing talks with the United States, which have taken place in Muscat and Rome since April 12, is a clear and tangible termination of sanctions, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.
He noted that Iran does not see any difference between the sanctions, as all of them have been imposed illegally and unjustifiably.
Baqaei also pointed to Iran’s past experience with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), highlighting the US’s lack of commitment to the deal. He stressed that any potential agreement should not only lift sanctions but also enable Iran to engage in trade and banking activities freely. Furthermore, the spokesperson emphasized the need for guarantees that the outcome of the negotiations would be lasting and that all parties would uphold their commitments.
In response to questions about Iran's consultations with other JCPOA members, Baqaei confirmed that China, Russia, and the European signatories have been kept informed throughout the process. He reiterated that these countries remain part of the agreement as per UN Security Council Resolution 2231.
Delegations from Iran and the US have held two rounds of indirect talks in Oman and Italy, aiming to reach an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and the removal of sanctions. Baqaei revealed that further technical discussions will take place in Muscat on April 23, followed by a meeting of senior negotiators on April 26.
