Italy confirms high-level delegation for COP29 in Azerbaijan
Italy will actively participate in COP29 with a high-level delegation, according to Italian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Luca di Gianfrancesco.
Responding to a question from Trend, di Gianfrancesco emphasized the significance of the event for advancing the climate agenda.
"Italy will certainly take an active part in the upcoming COP29, represented by a high-level delegation throughout the session. This is a very important event to advance the climate agenda," he stated.
The ambassador also congratulated Azerbaijan on hosting the conference, expressing confidence in its success. "We are confident that this event will be a success," he said.
Luca di Gianfrancesco was appointed ambassador to Baku on May 20, succeeding Claudio Taffuri.
Azerbaijan will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in November. The decision was made during COP28's plenary meeting in Dubai on December 11 of the previous year. Baku is expected to welcome approximately 70-80 thousand foreign guests over the two-week event.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The Conference of Parties (COP) is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the convention. Currently, 198 countries are parties to the convention, and unless otherwise decided, the COP is held annually. The first COP took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is based in Bonn.
