Kazakh, Uzbek leaders praise Trump’s contribution to South Caucasus peace
Kazakhstan has expressed strong support for the normalisation of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, achieved through the mediation of US President Donald Trump.
According to the presidential press service, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev addressed the issue during his speech at the high-level debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, held at the UN headquarters in New York.
“We also welcome the normalisation of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia through the mediation of the President of the United States. This proves that even long-standing conflicts can be resolved through diplomacy and common sense. Guided by this principle, Kazakhstan consistently advocates diplomacy instead of escalation and dialogue instead of force,” Tokayev stated.
The role of President Trump in facilitating peace was also highlighted by Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during his meeting with the US leader. According to the Uzbek presidential press service, Mirziyoyev congratulated Trump on his achievements in both domestic and foreign policy and specifically praised his efforts in resolving international and regional conflicts.
“At the beginning of the conversation, the head of Uzbekistan sincerely congratulated President Donald Trump on his high achievements in the implementation of domestic and foreign policy. His personal contribution and efforts towards the peaceful resolution of acute international and regional conflicts were particularly noted,” the statement said.
In remarks broadcast by the conservative media company RSBN, Mirziyoyev said: “I would like to congratulate you once again on ending all those conflicts <...>. In particular, you have resolved the most important conflict for our region, between Azerbaijan and Armenia. I repeat, you deserve the Nobel Peace Prize more than anyone else. We say this and will continue to say it.”
