Kremlin: Putin open to ceasefire in Ukraine but seeks clarity on key issues

07 April 2025 14:36

Russian President Vladimir Putin supports the idea of a ceasefire in Ukraine, but several critical questions must be addressed beforehand, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.

Speaking to journalists on April 7, Peskov commented on remarks by US President Donald Trump, who had criticised Russian strikes on Ukraine and called for them to stop, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.

“President Putin indeed supports the idea of a ceasefire,” Peskov told reporters. “But before that, a whole range of questions must be answered. These questions remain unresolved, and no answers have been provided.”

In a separate briefing, Peskov said Moscow was in “constant consultation” with Iran over the nuclear deal and expressed Russia’s readiness to facilitate a political and diplomatic resolution between Tehran and Washington.

“We are in ongoing contact with our Iranian partners, including on the issue of the nuclear agreement,” he said. “This process will continue, including shortly.”

“Russia is ready to do everything in its power to help resolve this issue through political and diplomatic means,” he added.

The Kremlin also voiced concern over volatility in global oil markets, linking it to a recent decision by the United States to impose tariffs on most countries worldwide.

“We are monitoring the situation very closely,” Peskov said, noting that the oil market is experiencing “extraordinary turbulence, tension, and emotional pressure”.

His remarks come as Brent crude futures for the June 2025 delivery fell below $63 per barrel on the London ICE exchange—its lowest level since April 12, 2021.

“This is a key indicator for replenishing our budget,” the Kremlin spokesman noted, highlighting the impact of the US tariff move on international energy markets.
