Major General: Azerbaijan clears over 6,800 hectares of liberated lands of mines since early 2023 UPDATED
Head of the Main Directorate of Engineering Troops, Major General Anar Karimov has said that the special units of the engineering troops of the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry cleared more than 6,800 hectares of liberated territories of mines in 2023.
“Sappers and specially trained dogs are involved in the demining process. In total, over 6,800 hectares of liberated territories have been cleared of mines since early 2023. Some 234 infantry mines, 706 anti-tank mines and 1,405 unexploded ordnance of various calibers were defused. Some unexploded ordnance found in the liberated territories is defused at the Godekburun training ground,” he told Report.
Karimov added that special units of the engineering troops of the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry are defusing not only mines produced in Armenia, but also home-made explosive devices in the liberated territories.
“Mines and explosive devices are either burned or detonated in a safe area. Demining is a very complex process, in which, along with sappers, modern technical equipment and specially trained dogs are used. The Azerbaijani army received 20 remote-controlled vehicles for mine clearance from Türkiye. Our sappers use the most modern equipment. Before demining, monitoring is carried out at the site. Then we make a decision on mine clearance and tools to be used in this process,” Karimov said.
