Media: Erdoğan proposes trilateral summit on Iran to Trump
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has proposed holding a trilateral summit on Iran with U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian representatives, Türkiye’s Hürriyet newspaper reported.
According to the report, Erdoğan conveyed the proposal during a phone call with Trump on January 27. The Turkish leader suggested a high-level meeting involving the United States, Iran, and Türkiye, possibly to be held via videoconference.
“Trump is said to have responded positively to Erdoğan’s proposal,” Hürriyet columnist Hande Fırat wrote.
The newspaper also reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to visit Türkiye later this week for talks with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, although specific dates were not disclosed.
The foreign ministers of Türkiye and Iran last spoke by phone on January 28, discussing recent developments surrounding Iran and efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.
Ankara hopes the situation around Iran can be resolved through diplomatic means. Speaking on TRT Haber on January 28 evening, Akif Çağatay Kılıç, chief adviser to the Turkish president on foreign policy and security, said Türkiye believes that external intervention in Iran’s internal affairs would not yield positive results.
