MP: German ambassador to Georgia breaches diplomatic standards
German Ambassador to Georgia Peter Fischer's recent remarks have been deemed inconsistent with diplomatic standards, and the Georgian populace will not accept such a tone.
Rati Ionatamishvili, a member of the ruling Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party, expressed this sentiment, Caliber.Az reports citing Georgian media.
Fischer had previously commented on the social media platform X, stating that “someone scored an auto-goal today.” This remark appeared to be in response to ruling party general secretary Kakha Kaladze, a former football star, who criticized German Foreign Minister for European Affairs Anna Luhrmann, referring to her as “Kubilius in a skirt.” Kaladze’s comparison highlighted Luhrmann’s alignment with Andrius Kubilius, a Lithuanian politician known for his stern criticisms of the current Georgian government. Notably, Kubilius is set to assume the role of European Commissioner for Defence and Space on November 1.
Ionatamishvili emphasized, “If they think they are the masters here, they are deeply mistaken. We are a proud and free nation, and we will never tolerate such statements.” He also addressed concerns regarding increasing external interference in Georgia's upcoming parliamentary elections, noting that outside actors are attempting to meddle in the electoral process to influence outcomes.
He stated, “Their efforts will likely prove counterproductive, and rightly so.” Ionatamishvili added that such interference could ultimately strengthen the Georgian Dream’s position, leading to a constitutional majority with enhanced legitimacy following the elections on October 26, which he emphasized is crucial for the country, its people, and its governance.
