Nearly 1,000 individuals return to Karabakh in August, state committee reports
In August 2025, a total of 264 families, encompassing 957 individuals, have returned to their permanent homes in territories liberated from occupation, the State Committee on Affairs of Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons stated.
The resettlement efforts focused on several villages within the Karabakh region, specifically Ballija and Khan Yurdu in Khojaly district, Vangli and Kolatagh in Aghdara district, as well as Khidirli in Aghdam district, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Prior to their return, these families were temporarily accommodated across various locations in the country, including dormitories, sanatoriums, and administrative buildings. The recent relocations mark a significant step in restoring normalcy and rebuilding communities in the liberated territories.
Officials emphasized that the State Committee remains committed to facilitating the smooth reintegration of displaced families, providing necessary support and infrastructure to ensure sustainable resettlement in the affected areas.
Following the end of the occupation in November 2020 and the restoration of territorial integrity, Azerbaijan launched the Great Return program as a comprehensive, state-led effort to facilitate the safe and dignified return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their revitalised ancestral lands. By 2026, the first phase targets the resettlement of 140,000 IDPs across 100 settlements, with a long-term goal of full restoration by 2040.
