New Caledonia activist asserts path to independence with Azerbaijan's support

Isabelle Kaloi, a member of the New Caledonia party, denounced France's proposed law as a severe threat to the Kanak people's right to self-determination and even their existence.

Speaking at the inaugural congress in Baku alongside leaders advocating independence from French neo-colonialism, she highlighted the discriminatory targeting, attacks, and repression faced by young Kanaks under France's policies, Caliber.Az reports.

"We will continue our united efforts towards independence and a brighter future for our people. I extend my gratitude to Azerbaijan and the Baku Initiative Group, confident that with your support, independence will one day be realized," emphasized Isabelle Kaloi.

Cali Iborn, another activist from the New Caledonia party, underscored ongoing repression since May 13, attributing it to France's efforts to stifle their voice and justice.

"From Azerbaijan, we will amplify our plea to French politicians, rejecting France's unacceptable conditions in the new constitution for New Caledonia. Our voices must be heard," declared the activist.

The inaugural congress of leaders from more than 15 political parties and movements advocating for independence in regions historically impacted by French colonialism — including Corsica, Melanesia, Polynesia, the Caribbean, and the Antilles — began in Baku on July 17.

Organized by the People's Association for the Liberation of Guadeloupe and supported by the Baku Initiative Group, the congress spans two days and aims to forge unity among participants in their pursuit of independence.
