New railroad allows for daily train travel for journeys between Baku, Gabala
The rail link connecting Baku and the northern city of Gabala has officially moved to a daily schedule, giving travellers the option to journey between the two destinations every day of the week by train.
The expanded service has been made possible by the launch of a new rail connection between Ganja, the country’s second-largest city, and Gabala, according to information published by Azerbaijan Railways (ADY).
Under the new arrangement, passengers travelling from Baku to Gabala can now board a train heading in the Gazakh direction and transfer at Laki station, where the direct Ganja–Gabala service departs. The return journey follows the same route in reverse. For travellers who prefer a direct connection, the existing nonstop Baku–Gabala-Baku train will continue to operate following its traditional schedule on Saturdays and Sundays.
Nestled amid tranquil pine forests and situated near the serene waters of Nohur Lake, Gabala is known as a peaceful retreat characterized by lush greenery, mountain scenery, and cascading waterfalls. The region combines natural beauty with a rich historical legacy.
Old Gabala once served as the capital of Caucasian Albania, an ancient state that covered much of present-day Azerbaijan from around the 4th century BC to the 8th century AD. Today, visitors are drawn to the area’s panoramic mountain views, while more adventurous travellers seek out attractions such as the multi-tiered Seven Beauties waterfall. The local cuisine also remains a highlight for food enthusiasts.
Among Gabala’s most popular attractions are the Gabala Archaeological Center, the recreational area surrounding Lake Nohur, the Gabaland Amusement and Recreation Park, and the Tufandag mountain resort, which attracts visitors year-round.
