Azerbaijan unveils timeframe for commissioning Khizi-Absheron wind power plant

24 October 2024 20:47

Head of the Renewable Energy Agency under the Azerbaijani Energy Ministry Javid Abdullayev has said that the full commissioning of the "Khizi-Absheron" wind power plant is scheduled for the last quarter of 2025.

Abdullayev made these remarks during an event at the Baku Shipyard, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

“By the end of this month, parts for eight wind turbines will be delivered to the wind power plant site. The length of each blade is 84 metres, and the height of the installed equipment exceeds 100 metres. We plan to install 12 turbines in the Absheron region and 25 in Khizi. The foundations for six turbines are already complete. The production of the turbines is fully finished, and they are being delivered in batches to their destinations," he stated.

He emphasised that the commissioning of the wind power plant will save 220 million cubic metres of natural gas.

"These volumes can be exported, which will help prevent the release of more than 400,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and provide 300,000 houses with electricity," he added.

On January 9, 2020, the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan and ACWA Power of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia signed an Implementation Agreement.

According to the Agreement, pilot project will be implemented for the construction of wind power plant with a capacity of 240 MW by “ACWA Power”.

In this regard, on December 30, 2020, Investment agreement, Power Purchase agreement and Transmission Connection agreement were signed on 240 MW wind power plant between the Ministry of Energy, Azerenergy OJSC and ACWA Power of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The total cost of the project is approximately $300 million and is expected to be fully funded by foreign investment.

On January 13, 2022, with the participation of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Minister of Energy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Prince Abdul Aziz bin Salman Al Saud, groundbreaking ceremony of the 240 MW Khizi-Absheron Wind Power Plant was held.
