Ombudsman says Azerbaijanis victim of double standards

09 December 2022 13:34

Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman) Sabina Aliyeva has said that Azerbaijani people have faced double standards and are suffering from it.

She made the remarks at an event dedicated to Human Rights Day on December 9, Report informs.

She noted that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has given human rights an international status: "It plays the role of an important document that the countries of the world should follow. At the same time, it recognises the right to equality and dignity of every person. The Declaration changed the global position on human rights. However, unfortunately, human rights are still being violated in the world. The Azerbaijani people are one of those who suffer from double standards. Thus, Armenian forces have not yet been unconditionally withdrawn from the territory of Azerbaijan, the need for which is indicated in UN resolutions. Unpunished Armenia has committed terror and crimes against humanity, against Azerbaijan."

Aliyeva noted that as a result of the 44-day war in 2020, the country restored the Azerbaijanis' rights that had been violated for 30 years.

"Human rights and freedoms are protected in Azerbaijan today, and the legislative framework is updated," she said.

The rights commissioner emphasised that the structure she leads does not discriminate in protecting the rights of Azerbaijani citizens, stateless people, foreigners, and people from vulnerable groups.
