A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Türkiye’s northwestern Balikesir province on August 10, killing one person, injuring 29 others and causing the collapse of 16 buildings, officials said.
The quake hit at 7:53 p.m. (16:53 GMT) at a depth of 11 kilometres, Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said. It was felt in several provinces, including Istanbul, the country’s largest city, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said an 81-year-old man died after being pulled from the rubble by emergency crews. Search and rescue operations have now concluded, and there are no reports of further casualties or major damage, he added.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) measured the quake at magnitude 6.19 with a depth of 10 km. Yerlikaya said he would remain in the affected area for the next two days.
