Parliament chair: Some political groups using PACE as weapon against Georgian people
Chairman of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, has condemned certain internal political groups that defend the convicted former President Mikheil Saakashvili.
These people have long used the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) as a weapon against the Georgian people, he said, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
On April 7, during the spring session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, debates on Georgia will take place. The issues outlined in the resolution adopted on January 29 will be discussed, as well as the question of revoking the mandates of the "Georgian Dream" delegation.
"Regarding the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, unfortunately, political groups supporting Saakashvili have long used it as a weapon against the Georgian people," Papuashvili wrote on social media.
In this context, the head of the Georgian legislative body reminded that back in 2022, with the participation of these groups, PACE declared Saakashvili, whom Papuashvili described as the creator of a corrupt system of business racketeering and torture, a political prisoner and demanded his release.
"After that, of course, no decision or resolution is surprising anymore," the Speaker of Parliament emphasized.
Papuashvili also reminded that in January of this year, following the adoption of a resolution that violates the sovereignty of the Georgian people, all members of the Georgian delegation left PACE.
"Today, the Georgian Parliament does not have its delegation in PACE. Therefore, the issue of recognizing the delegation's credentials cannot be discussed," he noted.
