Philippines eyes deeper cooperation with Azerbaijan in energy sector, envoy says
The Philippines is seeking to learn from Azerbaijan’s energy expertise and expand bilateral cooperation, according to the country’s newly appointed ambassador to Türkiye, Azerbaijan and Georgia, Jaime Ramon T. Ascalon.
Speaking to local media, Ascalon said Azerbaijan’s policy of strengthening ties across Asia was “commendable”, adding that Baku’s push to diversify its international partnerships reflected both economic needs and the search for new markets.
He noted that Azerbaijan has well-developed industrial capabilities and said the diversification of supply chains has become increasingly important amid recent global disruptions.
“As far as I am aware, significant investments are currently being made in the energy sector in Türkiye. However, although attention is mainly focused on close neighbours, recent crises have shown that supply chains need to be diversified. In this respect, Azerbaijan’s Asian policy is balanced,” the envoy said.
Ascalon added that certain technologies and experience from Azerbaijan’s energy sector could be of value to the Philippines, particularly as Manila explores ways to strengthen its own energy security and resilience.
“Our aim is to study what Azerbaijan offers and to identify areas for mutually beneficial cooperation with the Philippines. The energy sector is one of Azerbaijan’s strongest areas,” he said.
Despite the interest in closer engagement, the diplomat acknowledged that trade between the two countries remains very limited, citing geographical distance as one of the main constraints.
“Currently, trade is very limited. Despite the geographical distance, we should explore opportunities to expand it,” he added.
