PM: Majority of opposition parties in Georgia to be banned
The Georgian government is preparing to file a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court seeking to ban a significant number of political parties, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced.
Georgian media, cited by Caliber.Az report that the initiative stems from the findings of a parliamentary investigative commission, which concluded that certain political groups were involved in human rights violations and obstructed the formation of a stable and democratic political system in the country.
The commission’s report identified the “United National Movement,” “Coalition for Change,” “Strong Georgia,” and “Gakharia – For Georgia” among those accused of such actions.
Kobakhidze stated that the upcoming constitutional lawsuit will list all targeted parties once it is officially submitted.
“You will see the full list on the day the lawsuit is officially filed. As for the approach and the principle, the principle is as follows: those who were representatives of the bloody regime before 2012 will, of course, definitely be covered by this lawsuit. As for the period after 2012, this constitutional lawsuit will certainly cover all those who, together with this bloody political force, participated in the constant sabotage against the country,” he said.
The prime minister emphasised that the lawsuit would not concern only a few political entities. “It will not be one or two parties,” Kobakhidze noted, adding that the government plans to complete and submit the case to the Constitutional Court within the coming days.
“Today, our political system is represented by political parties that are constantly set to destroy. Their every step is directed against the democratic system. They are trying to prevent the creation of a healthy political system in Georgia, and this must be countered with constitutional methods. This is precisely what the constitutional suit that will be filed with the Constitutional Court in the near future expresses,” the Georgian leader concluded.
