Political analyst: Armenia faces security vacuum
Armenia's choice not to endorse the two statements from the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers should not be interpreted as a demarche.
Political analyst Stepan Danielyan shared this perspective, Caliber.Az reports citing Armenian media sources.
“I don't consider it a demarche. For a demarche, it is necessary to represent something of oneself first of all. This step is evidence of the absence of a vector, foreign policy guidelines. It is an attempt to sit on two chairs, but rather an attempt not to sit on either one, but to stay on one's feet,” he explained.
Danielyan emphasized that both statements pertained to security issues, highlighting Armenia's precarious position in this regard. “The country has frozen its participation in the CSTO and conducts unclear exercises with NATO, yet the U.S. and the EU unanimously declare that they cannot ensure Armenia's security.”
He continued, “At the moment, Armenia is essentially not in any bloc and has been turned into a country without a security system. And the current government considers the absence of this system a great achievement. Hanging by a thread, in their opinion, is the highest manifestation of sovereignty,” the expert asserted.
It's worth noting that Armenia did not join two statements from the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers the day before, specifically those regarding the “Principles of Ensuring Security in Eurasia” and the “Inadmissibility of Unilateral Measures in International Relations.”
