Russia calls for diplomatic resolution in Persian Gulf
Russia has highlighted a potential “window of opportunity” to resolve escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf, emphasising the importance of diplomatic engagement and regional dialogue.
In a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, Moscow welcomed the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran in Islamabad, mediated by Pakistan, as a crucial step toward stabiliing the region, Caliber.Az reports.
“The majority of countries support this effort, placing their hopes on the success of the negotiations,” the ministry said.
However, Russia expressed concern that certain actors are hindering progress, either intentionally or inadvertently, by framing Iran as responsible for disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The ministry stressed that the strategic waterway had operated without interruption until February 28, urging clarity on the sequence of events.
Moscow called for addressing the “root causes” of the ongoing conflict, specifically citing wars initiated by the United States and Israel. The statement highlighted the consequences for countries across the Arabian Peninsula, as well as military activity along the Lebanese-Israeli border and missile and air strikes in Lebanon, calling for an immediate cessation.
Russia reiterated its support for resolving disputes in the region through political and diplomatic channels, emphasising cooperation with international partners to advance peace and ensure long-term stability.
The ministry urged all participants in the Islamabad talks to act responsibly and avoid actions that could jeopardise the negotiation process. Russia also reaffirmed its initiative to establish a Persian Gulf security framework, involving all littoral states and supported by external actors capable of fostering a fair and sustainable balance of interests.
