Russia imposes new border notification rules for EU, Schengen diplomats
Russia will introduce new border-crossing requirements for diplomats from European Union member states, several Schengen Area countries, and staff of the EU Delegation in Moscow from June 15, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The ministry’s Department of State Protocol said the new procedure will apply to diplomats accredited in Russia, consular officials, administrative and technical personnel, as well as their adult family members, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
Under the rules, affected individuals must submit a diplomatic note to the Russian Foreign Ministry before each trip across the Russian border. The notification must include personal information, travel itinerary, purpose of the trip, dates of entry and exit, and details of transportation.
In addition to submitting an electronic copy by email, travellers will be required to carry a paper copy of the diplomatic note, which may be requested by border authorities during inspections.
The Foreign Ministry said the only exception applies to direct flights between Russia and a diplomat’s country of citizenship, provided the journey does not involve stopovers within the European Union.
For all other travel routes, diplomats and covered personnel will be required to notify Russian authorities both when entering and leaving the country.
The move introduces additional administrative requirements for European diplomats and EU mission staff operating in Russia amid continued tensions between Moscow and Western governments.
