Russia offers to facilitate Iran–US nuclear deal implementation, says spokesperson
On May 21, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Moscow is prepared to assist Iran and the United States in implementing any agreements that may emerge from ongoing negotiations over Iran’s enriched uranium programme.
Speaking at a briefing in Moscow, Zakharova reaffirmed Russia’s support for Iran’s right to pursue a peaceful nuclear programme under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
She stressed that decisions regarding uranium enrichment and the management of nuclear materials should remain solely in the hands of the Iranian people.
“Russia is fully committed to providing the necessary assistance to Tehran and Washington in carrying out any decisions that may be reached during the negotiations,” Zakharova said.
She added that the dispute surrounding Iran’s nuclear activities could only be resolved through political and diplomatic means grounded in international law and with due consideration for Iran’s interests.
Zakharova declined to disclose details of the ongoing talks, noting that discussions were continuing behind closed doors.
