Russia welcomes Türkiye’s willingness to support Ukraine peace efforts
Russia welcomes Türkiye’s willingness to assist in achieving a peaceful settlement in Ukraine, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.
Peskov told journalists that the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in his remarks, spoke of Türkiye’s readiness and desire to continue its mediation efforts and support the peace process in Ukraine, which is welcomed by Russia, Caliber.Az reports via TASS.
He added that the leaders of Central Asian countries who attended the International Forum on Peace and Trust in Ashgabat largely did not address the Ukrainian issue in their speeches.
Additionally, the spokesperson stressed that Moscow is unaware of whether a meeting between US President Donald Trump and representatives of Ukraine and the European Union will take place.
“We do not know whether it [the meeting between Trump and Ukraine/EU representatives — ed.] will happen or not; the US has not decided yet. We have no such information,” he noted.
Mediation efforts by international actors, including Türkiye, have aimed to bridge the deep political divide between Kyiv and Moscow, but progress has been limited due to starkly different positions on core issues such as territorial sovereignty and conditions for a ceasefire.
European leaders have publicly encouraged President Erdoğan to use Türkiye’s diplomatic leverage with Russia to bring both sides back to the negotiating table, signalling broader international interest in Türkiye’s role beyond bilateral relations.
Separately, the US administration has developed alternative peace proposals for the conflict—some controversial and involving territorial compromises—that have shaped the wider negotiation landscape, reflecting competing diplomatic approaches alongside Türkiye’s engagement.
