Russian FM backs Trump’s peace stance on Ukraine

19 November 2024 22:57

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed support for US President-elect Donald Trump's stance on Ukraine, emphasizing that those advocating for peace rather than conflict deserve backing.

Speaking at a press conference following the G20 summit in Brazil, Lavrov commented on Trump’s position regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

"As for Trump's position on Ukraine, I can't speculate. He said that he is the president of peace, not war, and those politicians who declare their desire for peace, not war, it seems to me, really deserve support," Lavrov said.

Lavrov further added that Russia also supports initiatives put forward by China and Brazil aimed at peacefully resolving the Ukraine conflict.

China and Brazil are moving to form a “Friend of Peace” platform to work towards ending war in Ukraine that began in February 2022.

The two countries have issued six-point consensus, which calls on all parties concerned to de-escalate, create conditions for direct talks until the realization of a cease-fire, increase humanitarian assistance, oppose use of weapons of mass destruction, oppose attacks on nuclear power plants and other peaceful nuclear facilities, and protect the stability of global industrial and supply chains.

The platform aims to make an objective and rational voice and play a constructive role in the political settlement of the Ukrainian issue.
