Russian MFA issues travel warning over Schengen entry procedures
Starting October 12, 2025, all foreign citizens entering Schengen countries, including Russians, will be required to provide biometric data at the border, the Russian Foreign Ministry has reminded.
"From October 12, 2025, all member states of the Schengen zone will implement a new entry and exit control system at their external borders,” the statement, quoted by TASS, reads.
Under the new rules, third-country nationals, including Russian citizens travelling for short-term purposes, must submit biometric data such as fingerprints and facial photographs upon entry.
The Foreign Ministry further explained that biometric verification will also take place upon departure from Schengen countries. Travellers are advised to plan their trips accordingly and to arrive at airports early to allow sufficient time for the procedures.
The European Commission previously stated that the deployment of the new Entry/Exit System (EES) at the EU’s external borders is expected to be completed within six months. The system is designed to curb illegal migration and prevent unauthorised border crossings, including those involving forged documents. For subsequent visits within three years, only facial biometric scans will be required.
The Russian Association of Tour Operators (ATOR) noted that refusal to provide biometric data will result in denial of entry. Fingerprints will not be required for children under 12. Additionally, refusal of entry will be recorded in the EES, which could serve as grounds for a ban from visiting other EU countries.
