Submarine cable delivered to Baku for Europe–Asia digital corridor project PHOTO
A submarine fibre-optic cable destined for the Trans-Caspian Fiber Optic Cable Line (FOCL) project has been transported from Kazakhstan to Azerbaijan, marking a key step in the development of the Digital Silk Way initiative aimed at creating a new digital corridor between Europe and Asia.
According to the Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company (ASCO), a subsidiary of AZCON Holding, the cable was shipped from the port of Kurik to the port of Baku aboard the ferry vessel Azerbaijan, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
The oversized cargo was first delivered to Kurik by a convoy of three specialised transport vehicles before being loaded onto the ferry. The shipment was then transported safely across the Caspian Sea and successfully unloaded upon arrival in Baku.
The Trans-Caspian Fiber Optic Cable Line is a major infrastructure project designed to enhance digital connectivity between Europe and Asia by establishing a high-capacity data transmission route across the Caspian region.
ASCO said its role in the project extends beyond transportation. The company has also been involved in maritime operations supporting the initiative. Earlier, ASCO’s vessel Turkan participated in marine route surveys for the project, conducting studies of coastal areas and the seabed to help determine the optimal route for the cable.
The Digital Silk Way project is expected to strengthen regional digital infrastructure, improve international data transit capabilities, and enhance connectivity between Asian and European markets.
