Tbilisi mayor warns against external influence in Georgian politics, slams those campaigning abroad
Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze emphasized that governance of Georgia rests exclusively with its people, dismissing notions that external forces should dictate the country’s leadership.
Speaking at a public event as part of his ongoing campaign for re-election, Kaladze criticized certain political figures who have chosen to conduct their electioneering abroad rather than engaging directly with Georgian voters at home, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
“Some politicians are campaigning beyond our borders instead of meeting Georgian voters face to face,” Kaladze observed. “They erroneously believe that our country should be governed from outside. Let there be no doubt — this nation is governed solely by the Georgian people, and no one else. This reality must be acknowledged both domestically and internationally.”
Highlighting Georgia’s proud cultural heritage, history, and traditions, Kaladze further asserted the need for respectful and equal partnerships on the global stage. “We seek friends and allies, and we value international cooperation. However, we will not accept a posture where a larger power looks down upon us, a small nation with a rich legacy, and dictates terms from above,” he stated.
Kaladze made these remarks amid growing political tensions ahead of the Tbilisi mayoral elections scheduled for October 4. The incumbent, representing the ruling Georgian Dream party, is widely regarded as the leading candidate for a third term.
