Tehran welcomes peace treaty text agreement between Baku and Yerevan Offers to mediate signing
Iran has welcomed the recent breakthrough in peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia, after both sides agreed on the final text of a long-awaited peace treaty.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Centre for Analysis of International Relations (AIR), Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh expressed support for the development and suggested that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian could play a mediating role during the signing process, Caliber.Az reports, citing local press.
“I believe that this issue will also be reflected in the daily contacts of both countries,” Khatibzadeh said, referring to the continued diplomatic engagement between Baku and Yerevan.
The Iranian statement follows an announcement on March 13 by the Armenian Foreign Ministry, which confirmed that Yerevan had accepted Azerbaijan’s proposals on the two previously unresolved articles of the peace treaty. “The Peace Agreement is ready for signing. The Republic of Armenia is ready to begin consultations with the Republic of Azerbaijan on the dates and place of signing the agreement,” the ministry said, adding that it had communicated this acceptance to Baku through diplomatic channels.
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also confirmed that both sides had finalised the draft peace treaty. He reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s commitment to continued dialogue with Armenia as part of the broader normalisation process.
As the peace process advances, Azerbaijan has emphasised the importance of formally dissolving the OSCE Minsk Group and its related structures, arguing that they are no longer relevant.
Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan addressed this point, saying that once the peace treaty is signed, the mediation role of the OSCE Minsk Group will become obsolete.
