Turkish tank protection system makes headlines in Greek media
The success of the Turkish defense industry is having an impact on the Greek media. This time, the Altay main battle tank was on the agenda.
The Greek press writes that the Altay tank, which is expected to be produced in 2023, has been significantly redesigned using a large number of components produced by the Turkish defence industry, Star reported on November 3.
The Akkor active protection system and the laser-guided tank gun, both developed by ASELSAN, are the main components of the Altay tank.
"The fact that the Altay tank will have an active protection system (Akkor) forces Greece to purchase new American-made anti-tank systems," the article noted.
The Akkor system will be designed for use in the Altay national tank and is an active protection system that can be applied to many types of armored vehicles thanks to its modular architecture. ASELSAN has been working on this system, which is employed by very few armies in the world, using its own resources since 2008. Since 2010, the radar, central computer and physical munition associated with the system have been successfully tested.
Akkor, which will initially be developed by ASELSAN, provides a complete 360-degree protective shield. The system has been designed to detect an approaching missile in a very short time using its high-tech radar. The physical destruction munitions will detonate next to the approaching missile utilizing the integrated sensors to eliminate the threat.
Thanks to the smart sensor on the munitions, the Akkor system will surpass its global counterparts.
