Türkiye eyes key role in Zangazur corridor, boosting green energy potential for Europe
Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, has affirmed his country’s strong interest in the development of the Zangazur energy corridor, including its crucial energy component, as part of broader regional cooperation.
Bayraktar emphasized the significance of the Zangazur corridor for Türkiye and Europe, noting that its realization is of great importance for both regions, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
"We are very eager for this corridor to be completed, both from an energy supply standpoint and for its broader strategic benefits. It is essential for Türkiye, and it holds great potential for Europe. We are hopeful that this project will come to fruition," he stated.
Bayraktar also addressed the pressing issue of climate change, highlighting the importance of enhancing interconnectivity between countries and regions to facilitate a transition to green energy.
"We are here at a climate conference focused on green transformation. The key to addressing climate change is strengthening communications and energy interconnectors between regions. One of the most promising areas for such interconnectors is the Caspian Sea, which holds enormous potential for wind energy," he explained.
According to the World Bank, Bayraktar noted that the wind energy potential in the Caspian region is estimated at 7,500 MW, making it a critical source of clean energy. "We are working towards utilizing this vast potential to supply large volumes of green energy to Türkiye and, through the Zangazur corridor, to Europe," he added.
Additionally, Bayraktar highlighted the significant solar energy potential in Nakhchivan, an autonomous region of Azerbaijan. "We are also exploring ways to channel solar power from Nakhchivan to Türkiye, further enhancing our energy security and green energy capacity."
