Türkiye's ASELSAN to modernise Chile's Leopard 2CHL tanks PHOTO/VIDEO

Turkish company ASELSAN and Chilean FAMAE have signed a contract for the joint modernisation of a rare version of Chilean Leopard 2CHL tanks.

The contract for the modernisation of the fleet of Leopard 2A4CHL tanks in service with the Chilean Army was signed by the parties on Friday, July 14.

One of the advantages of Famae working with Aselsan is the transfer of technology. This will expand the Chilean company's capabilities and it will be able to continue to support the armoured vehicle fleet further.

The modernisation solution will also meet some requirements, such as the use of special materials in line with Chile's geography. After the Leopard 2A4, the Marder 1A3 armoured fighting vehicles in service with the Chilean army are expected to be similarly upgraded with the cooperation of ASELSAN and FAMAE.

ASELSAN is also currently implementing a project to modernise Leopard 2A4 tanks in service with the Turkish Armed Forces. Under the contract, ASELSAN is providing the tank's fire control system, remote weapon control system, tank control communication and information system, tank laser warning system, driver vision system, active protection system, and close-range surveillance system.

According to information, 81 Leopard 2A4 AMT tanks will be modernised in the first phase of the project "Adding Capabilities to Tanks - Leopard 2A4 (TİYK-LEO 2A4)".

This modernisation will increase the ballistic protection levels of Leopard 2A4 tanks and integrate more advanced electronics. Although 81 Leopard 2A4 tanks will be modernised in the first phase of the project, there is also an option for 250 units.

TİYK-LEO 2A4 is a very large-scale modernisation project. In addition to armour, it also includes upgrades such as the fire control system and active protection system.
