UN circulates letter on Armenia’s racist policies, sparked by former president’s controversial speech
A letter from the Western Azerbaijan Community to UN Secretary-General António Guterres regarding former Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s controversial 1993 speech has officially been circulated as a document within both the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council.
The letter highlights the significant implications of Ter-Petrosyan’s speech, which the Western Azerbaijan Community views as confirmation of Armenia's policy of ethnic cleansing and occupation, Caliber.Az reports.
The speech, in which Ter-Petrosyan praised the expulsion of Azerbaijanis from Armenia as a “historical achievement,” is described by the community as a blatant admission of a state-sanctioned racist and criminal policy.
In the communication to the UN Secretary-General, the Western Azerbaijan Community condemned Ter-Petrosyan’s remarks, asserting that they serve as undeniable proof of Armenia’s anti-human and discriminatory stance towards Azerbaijanis.
“Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s speech unequivocally confirmed that ethnic cleansing and occupation constitute the state policy of Armenia, and he referred to the expulsion of Azerbaijanis from the country as a ‘historical achievement.’ In our letter to the UN Secretary-General, we emphasized that this statement by Ter-Petrosyan serves as irrefutable evidence that Armenia’s state policy is inherently racist, anti-human, and criminal,” the community stressed.
“The dissemination of this letter as an official document within the UN General Assembly and Security Council is of paramount importance for establishing Armenia’s accountability for its actions within the framework of international law. We remain committed to advancing this issue and ensuring that regional and international non-governmental organizations, particularly those advocating for human rights, give it the attention it rightfully deserves,” the community added.
