Another fact of chauvinism: Iranian authorities forbid giving children Turkic names
The prohibitions and restrictions which are imposed by the Iranian authorities on Turkic names are still relevant in the country.
Thus, the National Organisation for Civil Registration of Iran refused to issue an identity card to a child born in South Azerbaijan, because his name "Ilkin" is of Turkic origin, Caliber.Az reports citing the Turkish Kırım news agency.
Father of the child, Babek Husseini Mukaddim, made a statement on this issue on the social network.
“I went to the National Organisation for Civil Registration to get an identity card for my child. The organisation refused to give the identity card, saying that the name "Ilkin" is Turkic and that it was not on the list of allowed names. This is my right, I will fight until my child receives a document,” Babek Husseini Mukaddim noted.
For a long period of time, the Iranian authorities have been pursuing a policy of banning Turkic names. Residents of South Azerbaijan said that they cannot obtain identity cards for their children due to Turkic names. The actions of the National Organisation for Civil Registration caused big protests in South Azerbaijan. Many Azerbaijani families decided to publish information about the pressure exerted on them on social networks.
