Armenian ruling party MP calls opposition claims on border delimitation ridiculous
Vahagn Aleksanyan, a member of Armenia's ruling Civil Contract party, dismissed arguments raised by the opposition regarding the ongoing border delimitation with Azerbaijan, calling them "ridiculous”.
Aleksanyan made the remarks during a parliamentary session on May 21, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
He criticized the opposition for expressing outrage over using the 1969 decisions of the Armenian and Azerbaijani Soviet Supreme Soviets as a basis for delimitation.
"They [the opposition] conveniently forget that the very maps they cite from 1974-1979 are derived from those same 1969 decisions," Aleksanyan stated.
He further accused the opposition of being manipulated by Russian propaganda. "You are well aware of this," he said, "and what you're trying to spin in the public sphere is absurd. You are members of a party with a 130-year history, yet you dance to the tune of a Russian propagandist."
Aleksanyan linked the opposition's stance to a 2023 statement by a Russian propagandist with an Armenian surname, who allegedly suggested Bagrat Srbazan as a potential prime ministerial candidate.
"Now, you, a party with such a rich history, are fulfilling his agenda by trying to convince everyone that this movement is purely nationalistic," Aleksanyan concluded.
