Azerbaijan accuses Armenia of continuing landmine terrorism post-delimitation Calls for international intervention

02 August 2024 18:42

Sabina Aliyeva, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan, has accused Armenia of persisting with its policy of landmine terrorism even after the delimitation of the Azerbaijan-Armenia border.

"Even after the delimitation, Armenia continues its landmine terrorism policy and does not stop its actions that endanger the life and health of the population," Aliyeva stated, highlighting a recent incident in which three civilians and one military serviceman were injured due to a landmine explosion in the Gizilhajili village of Gazakh district, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

The village in question was returned to Azerbaijan based on the border delimitation agreement reached on April 19, 2024. Aliyeva emphasized that the ongoing threat posed by landmines is a significant obstacle to the safe return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and the overall development of the region.

"Obviously, even after the delimitation, Armenia continues its policy of landmine terrorism and does not stop its actions that endanger the life and health of the population. We once again stressed that the failure to provide our country with accurate maps of landmines buried in our territories seriously hinders the safe return of former IDPs to their lands, the provision of the right to live in a healthy environment, as well as the process of border delimitation and the restoration and construction work carried out in the region," she added.

Aliyeva called on the international community to take a stand against Armenia's actions and to pressure it into providing accurate landmine maps to Azerbaijan.

"The international community should influence Armenia towards handing over accurate mine maps to our country, and should not remain silent about its landmine terrorism," she underlined.
