Azerbaijan considers relocating renowned poet Nasimi’s grave from Syria PHOTO

26 August 2025 13:08

The grave of the renowned poet and philosopher Imadaddin Nasimi may soon be relocated from Syria to Azerbaijan, as part of a cultural and historical initiative by the Azerbaijani government.

Azerbaijani authorities have expressed formal interest in transferring Nasimi’s final resting place to their national territory. Preliminary discussions have already been held with the Syrian side, and Damascus has been officially informed of Baku’s intentions in this regard, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

Currently, Nasimi’s grave is located in the city of Aleppo, in the Syrian Arab Republic. Aleppo has been severely affected by years of ongoing military conflict, during which Nasimi’s grave reportedly suffered damage.

Historical records highlight the longstanding significance of the site to Azerbaijan. In 1970, during an official visit to Syria, national leader Heydar Aliyev—then First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan—oversaw the restoration of Nasimi’s grave and personally visited the location.

Further reaffirming Nasimi’s cultural importance, the Republic of Azerbaijan marked the 650th anniversary of the poet’s birth with extensive state-level celebrations in 2019.
