Azerbaijan, Iran railways explore strengthening strategic transport cooperation
Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) and the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (RAI) have held high-level discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation.
The talks took place in Baku between ADY Chairman Rovshan Rustamov and the head of Iranian Railways, Jabbar Ali Zakeri. The agenda focused on advancing joint projects, including the development of the Astara Terminal and the expansion of trilateral cooperation among Azerbaijan, Russia, and Iran, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
Officials highlighted the strategic importance of the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC), noting that ongoing work along this vital trade route reinforces Azerbaijan’s role as a key transport artery connecting multiple markets.
“Reconstruction of the Sumgayit–Yalama railway line, a key segment of the INSTC passing through Azerbaijan, will be completed by the end of the year,” Rustamov stated. He also revealed that the construction of the Astara Terminal on Iranian territory, undertaken by ADY, is slated for completion in the first quarter of 2026.
According to ADY, design work for the terminal is 94% complete, while construction and installation have reached approximately 82%. Once fully operational, the terminal is expected to significantly increase cargo volumes and enhance operational efficiency along the INSTC.
