Azerbaijan’s COP29 awarded for advancing high-tech solutions in climate change efforts

13 February 2025 09:32

The Azerbaijan Operations Company (AOC) COP29 has been honored with the esteemed Sustainability Leader Award by Cisco for its remarkable contributions to advancing sustainable development in the high-tech industry and its pioneering efforts in implementing innovative solutions.

This distinguished award marks the first time an operating company from Azerbaijan has been recognized with such an accolade, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

The award ceremony took place during the prestigious Cisco Live technological event, held in Amsterdam, Netherlands. At the event, COP29's Information Technology Department was recognized for its creation of a robust, secure, automated, and energy-efficient network infrastructure, specifically implemented for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

The Cisco Sustainability Leader Award is given to organizations that have successfully carried out projects supporting sustainable development while offering innovative solutions in the high-tech sector. Other notable recipients of this year’s award include T-Systems, SAP, STC, CORE42, Sykehuspartner, and Paris 2024, all of whom received recognition for their impactful projects.

Representing COP29 at the ceremony were Javid Huseynov, Aykhan Satiji, and Vusal Shahbazov from the AOC COP29 IT Department, who proudly accepted the award on behalf of the delegation.

COP29, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, officially commenced in Azerbaijan on November 11 and concluded on November 22. The conference marked a pivotal moment in the global battle against climate change, with Azerbaijan selected to host the event during the plenary session of COP28 in Dubai on December 11, 2023, due to the country’s proven track record in organizing large-scale international events.

Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, welcomed around 70,000 international guests, including political leaders, environmental experts, and representatives from the private sector and civil society. During the conference, the COP29 Presidency of Azerbaijan unveiled the Baku Finance Goal (BFG), a groundbreaking commitment to channel $1.3 trillion in climate finance to developing nations each year.

This ambitious new goal represents a substantial increase from the previous climate finance target of $100 billion and is expected to drive significant global investment. At the heart of this commitment is the pledge of developed nations to allocate at least $300 billion annually for climate projects in developing countries — three times the previous target. This major leap forward in climate finance will play a key role in addressing the pressing challenges of climate change across the globe.
