Azerbaijan’s population ticks up slightly, topping 10.2 million
The Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee has announced that the population grew modestly in the first four months of 2024, increasing by 11,338 people, or 0.1 per cent, to reach a total of 10,236,227.
From January to April, a total of 31,462 births were registered across regional and city registry offices under the Ministry of Justice, Caliber.Az reports, citing the State Statistics Committee.
However, this figure marks a 6.3 per cent decline compared to the same period in 2023, reflecting a notable drop in the country’s birth rate. Of the newborns, 53.4 per cent were boys and 46.6 per cent were girls. The period also saw the birth of 1,000 sets of twins and 42 sets of triplets. During the same four-month span, 14,953 deaths were recorded nationwide.
Encouragingly, the mortality rate declined slightly—from 6.2 to 6.1 deaths per 1,000 people—indicating a mild improvement in public health indicators. Despite the drop in births, Azerbaijan recorded a natural population increase of 10,927 people. However, this is a decrease from the 12,612-person natural growth reported during the same period in 2023, suggesting a continuing demographic trend of slowing population expansion.
