Azerbaijan taps China's JinkoSolar for $51 million clean energy project

20 May 2025 13:06

Chinese photovoltaic giant JinkoSolar is set to supply advanced solar modules for a 100-megawatt solar power plant currently under construction in Azerbaijan.

The company, one of the world’s leading solar panel manufacturers, will deliver its high-performance TOPCon N-type modules for the Gobustan Solar Power Plant project, according to an official announcement cited by local media.

The agreement was signed with Universal Energy, a Chinese energy firm whose Azerbaijani subsidiary, Universal Solar Azerbaijan LLC, is overseeing the project. JinkoSolar emphasised that the modules were chosen for their ability to perform reliably in extreme environmental conditions—an important consideration given the plant’s location.

The Gobustan region, where the facility is being built, is known for its harsh climate. In summer, temperatures can reach 45°C, and the area frequently endures strong winds, dust storms, and high salinity. Despite these challenges, the TOPCon N-type modules are designed to deliver consistent output thanks to their high power generation per watt and durability in all weather conditions.

One standout feature of the modules is their bifacial capability, with a rear-side efficiency of up to 85%. This allows for increased energy production from sunlight reflected off the ground, boosting overall generation by about 3.38%, and potentially even more under certain site conditions.

The investment agreement for the 100 MW Gobustan SPP was signed on April 22, 2025, between the Azerbaijani government and Universal Solar Azerbaijan. Under the deal, the government has pledged support in key areas such as tax benefits, land provision, grid connectivity, and coordination with local authorities to facilitate smooth project execution.

Universal Energy was selected to implement the project after winning an international tender held during the COP29 climate conference in November 2024. The total investment in the project is estimated at $51 million.

The solar power plant is expected to be operational by mid-2026. Once launched, it is projected to generate approximately 180 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year — enough to power tens of thousands of homes — while slashing annual CO₂ emissions by an estimated 146,500 tons.
