Azerbaijan urges global climate transparency at COP29
At an event on the margins of COP29 on "National Transparency Systems for Monitoring Climate Activity," Azerbaijan’s Deputy Energy Minister, Elnur Soltanov, called on countries worldwide to prioritize climate transparency.
Azerbaijan, he emphasized, is taking a leading role in this area, advocating for greater openness in climate action and financial flows, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Speaking at the event, Soltanov highlighted the significance of transparency in ensuring effective climate action and securing climate finance.
"Azerbaijan calls on all countries to ensure climate transparency," he said, underscoring the country’s commitment to promoting this principle both domestically and internationally.
One of the key highlights of the session was the presentation of Azerbaijan’s "National MRB System" (Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification), developed by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. This system, designed to enhance the accuracy and accountability of climate data, forms a core part of Azerbaijan's strategy for transparent climate governance. Soltanov explained that the initiative was created to address the trust gap between countries, which he identified as a significant barrier to the provision of adequate climate finance.
“Discussions with various parties since the start of the COP29 presidency process have shown that there is a trust issue between the parties, which hinders the delivery of sufficient climate finance,” Soltanov said. "Azerbaijan has long emphasized the importance of transparency to overcome this challenge."
He pointed out that Azerbaijan took the initiative to prepare key documents that lay the foundation for transparent climate policies and actions.
The event also featured a question-and-answer session, allowing participants to engage with Azerbaijan’s transparency efforts and explore how similar frameworks could be implemented globally to strengthen trust and accountability in climate action.
