Azerbaijani FM says strained relations with Iran mitigated following talks UPDATED
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has said that the attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran this year caused tension in relations between Baku and Tehran.
He made the remarks at a press conference on the results of the year, Report informs.
According to him, subsequently as a result of contacts it was possible to mitigate these tensions.
"There is a specific reason for the closure of our embassy in Iran: it is related to the terrorist attack on the embassy, the threat to people's lives," Bayramov said.
"The Azerbaijani side expects that the perpetrator of this offence must be punished in the strictest form, and the security of our embassy must be fully ensured, there must be guarantees of this. The dates for the start of the trial have been set, and of course, depending on this result we will make further decisions, and if the issues are resolved positively, it will be possible to resume the activities of the embassy," the minister said.
Diplomatic activities at the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran were completely suspended following the January attack on the Azerbaijani embassy. On January 27, an Iranian national carried out an armed attack on the Azerbaijan embassy in Tehran, killing an Azerbaijani security officer and injuring two others.
However, after several months, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry received appeals from Iran to restore the work of the Azerbaijani diplomatic mission in Tehran.
