Baku to host international conference on media’s role in decolonisation
An international conference examining the role of the media in decolonisation efforts will take place in Baku on July 11, bringing together journalists, experts and representatives from territories with colonial histories.
The event, titled “Media and Decolonisation: Rising Voices, Strengthening Narratives”, is being organised by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) and will serve as the first such platform in Azerbaijan involving media representatives from colonial territories, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
The conference will feature discussions between Azerbaijani and international journalists, media executives, political analysts, researchers, diplomats, government officials, civil society representatives and diaspora organisations.
Participants are expected to focus on the influence of media in shaping narratives around decolonisation, the challenges of reporting on colonial territories, and the need to combat disinformation, including content generated or amplified through artificial intelligence.
The agenda will also include discussions on documenting alleged colonial-era crimes, human rights issues, environmental justice and strengthening cooperation between journalists and rights advocates across different regions.
