COP29 International Advisory Committee convenes in New York Achievements and next steps on agenda
The Presidium of COP29, the upcoming 29th session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Azerbaijan, convened a regular meeting of its International Advisory Committee in New York. This committee comprises experts, public figures, and former government officials.
The meeting aimed to update members on the progress made by the COP29 Bureau since their last gathering last month, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
In his opening remarks, Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President-designate and Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources highlighted significant advancements in raising ambition and stimulating action. He noted that the COP29 team participated in approximately 75 events and bilateral meetings during the UN General Assembly and Climate Week.
Babayev shared insights about the week’s events, the initiatives proposed by COP29, and the discussions surrounding them. He emphasized the upcoming Pre-COP meeting in Baku next month, which will provide an opportunity for parties to exchange views and achieve political consensus. He expressed confidence in continuing support from the International Advisory Committee to facilitate cooperation on key presidential priorities.
Following Babayev’s remarks, COP29 Chief Negotiator Yalcin Rafiyev, UN High-Level Climate Leader Nigar Arpadarai, and Narmin Jarchalova, CEO of the COP29 Operating Company, discussed preparations for the Baku event and addressed questions from committee members.
International Advisory Committee members, including notable leaders such as Ismail Serageldin, Jean Baderschneider, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, Hindu Umaru Ibrahim, and Patricia Espinosa, commended the efforts made in preparation for COP29.
