28 August 2024 16:30

COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev recently met with Australia's Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, to discuss collaboration efforts ahead of the upcoming climate conference.

Their meeting in Australia was described as highly productive and valuable, focusing on global initiatives to combat climate change, both in preparation for COP29 and beyond, Caliber.Az reports citing COP29's message on X.

Key topics included renewable energy, emissions reduction, and investment in clean industries. The discussion also highlighted the critical role of climate finance at COP29 in November, emphasizing that adequate funding is essential for limiting global warming to within 1.5 degrees Celsius and addressing the urgent challenges posed by the climate crisis.

As part of the COP29 presidency team's climate change study efforts, Mukhtar Babayev visited the Sydney Institute of Marine Science in New South Wales, Australia. This institute is renowned as one of the world's leading centres for marine science, conducting advanced research on the effects of climate change and urbanization, habitat restoration, ocean resources, and the effectiveness of marine management strategies. The COP29 leadership emphasized that the visit is vital for enhancing global understanding and efforts to tackle climate change issues.

Azerbaijan is set to host COP29 in November, following a decision made at the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023.

The event in Baku is expected to attract between 70,000 to 80,000 international guests, making it a global hub for climate discussions.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), established during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to mitigate human impacts on the climate system. The Conference of the Parties (COP), which consists of 198 member countries, is the main body overseeing the UNFCCC's implementation, with meetings typically held annually since the first in Berlin in March 1995. The UNFCCC secretariat is based in Bonn.
