Deputy Minister: Zangazur corridor important for supply chain security

02 June 2023 13:30

Samir Mammadov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development, has said that the Zangazur corridor is extremely important for the establishment of peace in the South Caucasus and at the same time for supply chain security.

He made the remarks at the First International Transport-Logistics Forum held in Baku on June 2, Report informs.

According to him, the implementation of regional communication projects between the East Zangezur economic region and Nakhchivan through the Zangazur corridor, full use of the potential of the liberated from occupation territories creates great opportunities for Azerbaijan to promote the era of peace and cooperation in the South Caucasus.

The Deputy Minister noted that important work was carried out to restore the destroyed transport infrastructure and build new roads and railroads in the territories liberated from occupation.

"A regional transport master plan for these territories has been developed and important work has been done to implement the plan. Among the projects carried out in accordance with the master plan, the Horadiz-Agbend railroad is of great importance. This project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024."

The Zangazur corridor is a concept for a transport corridor which, if implemented, would give Azerbaijan unimpeded access to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic without Armenian checkpoints via Armenia's Syunik Province and, in a broad sense, for the geopolitical corridor that would connect Turkey to the rest of the Turkic world.

The establishment of the Zangazur corridor and restoration of all economic communications will also increase the attractiveness of the region for foreign investors, experts say.

Despite the implementation of several important energy and transport projects in the South Caucasus for many years, the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict has negatively affected the business environment and left Armenia aside from the regional projects.

Now, as the conflict ended, regional countries have the opportunity for the full use of the economic potential of the region, to attract additional investments to different project implementations, which was not possible due to the conflict.
