Euronews spotlights Azerbaijan’s green energy ambitions at Baku Energy Week 2025
Euronews has released a feature report on the 30th anniversary of Baku Energy Week, spotlighting Azerbaijan’s growing role in global energy transition efforts and its ambitions to become a renewable energy leader by 2030 and beyond.
In its coverage, Euronews emphasized the event's significance as more than a showcase of energy infrastructure. It was, the network said, “a great platform” for uniting regional and global efforts around clean energy development, technological innovation, and international cooperation, Caliber.Az reports.
“The purpose of this event was to tell the world what we have, what our mission and vision are, and how we can unite the world, both regionally and globally, to realize this potential for the benefit of Azerbaijan, the world and the region. In addition to traditional energy resources, we also share our vision in the field of green energy and decarbonization,” said Elnur Soltanov, Deputy Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan.
At the forum, Atsuko Hirose of the International Energy Charter presented new treaty amendments that now include emerging technologies such as hydrogen, ammonia, and carbon capture, reflecting evolving global energy priorities.
Gauri Singh of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) delivered a stark assessment of current progress toward global climate goals:
“Current efforts fall short of tripling renewables by 2030,” she said, warning that to stay on track, the world needs $1.5 trillion in annual investment. Singh acknowledged growing deployment in China, the US, and the EU, but underscored the importance of affordable capital in emerging markets.
“Future grids must be smarter, more digital, and more inclusive of intermittent sources,” she added, closing on an optimistic note: “The next generation of energy leaders is already showing up in force.”
Azerbaijan’s energy transition goals were echoed by Afgan Isayev, Vice President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), who underscored the company’s commitment to sustainability.
“By 2050, we will become a zero-emission energy company. We also have very ambitious goals for 2030 and 2035,” Isayev stated.
Euronews also featured commentary from Maryam Al Mazrouei, Head of Business Development and Investment in the CIS Region at Masdar (UAE), highlighting the strategic significance of the South Caucasus in global energy dialogue.
“Energy security and clean energy exports are important topics. This region is receiving a lot of attention in terms of energy, food and water security <...> This is a great platform, and today we are here to support Azerbaijan's path,” she said.
Held from June 2 to 4, the Baku Energy Forum brought together top energy policymakers, industry leaders, and experts to address the pressing challenges of global energy security, sustainable development, and climate commitments. The event also showcased Azerbaijan’s strategy to expand renewable energy production, with a target of installing 6.5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity by 2030 — representing over 35 per cent of the country’s total energy system capacity.
