Haber Global: Yekaterinburg attack coincidence or Russian chauvinism?
Turkish news channel Haber Global anchor Dilyara Sayan has called the recent attack in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg that left two Azerbaijanis dead and several others injured "a crime against humanity.”
In a statement to Azertag, the anchor emphasised that the violence in the Sverdlovsk region cannot be viewed as an isolated criminal incident, pointing to the strong response from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as evidence of the seriousness of the case, Caliber.Az reports.
Sayan reminded the channel’s multimillion audience about the ongoing pressure and discrimination faced by foreigners in Russia, including mass detentions of members of the Azerbaijani and other diasporas.
"The pressure and unlawful actions, which have taken on a systematic nature in the Russian Federation, have ultimately exhausted the patience of the Azerbaijani people," the anchor stated, also recalling the response of the Russian authorities to the incident involving the shooting at an AZAL airline plane in December 2024.
In this context, the anchor of the TV channel posed the question: "What is the reason behind the pressure and attacks on Azerbaijanis? Was this incident a coincidence, or is it part of a broader state policy of chauvinism in Russia?"
The channel does not rule out — and is concerned — that the brutality faced by the Safarov family in Yekaterinburg could be repeated in other regions of Russia.
