International Energy Agency unveils top priorities ahead of COP29

02 April 2024 18:02

The International Energy Agency (IEA) continues expanding its efforts to support the COP Presidencies Troika.

The COP Presidencies Troika was created to facilitate the succession process among COP28 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), COP29 in Azerbaijan and COP30 in Brazil, according to a press statement received by Azertac from IEA.

Following a high-level event with the leaders in the field of energy and climate organised by the IEA in February in connection with the COP28 outcome, the IEA held another meeting at its headquarters in Paris last week to discuss upcoming steps.

IEA executive director Fatih Birol discussed the main stages of preparation for the 29th session of the conference, as well as opportunities for cooperation and support for the IEA with appointed COP29 president Mukhtar Babayev in Copenhagen.

During a meeting with Brazil's Secretary for Green Economy, Decarbonisation and Bioindustry Rodrigo Rollemberg in Berlin, Birol discussed cooperation issues during the country's current G20 presidency and COP30 presidency in 2025 on such issues as a just energy transition.

Moreover, Birol, together with German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck and Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock, addressed a high-level audience at the opening ceremony of the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue Conference. He said that ahead of the COP29 conference, which will be held in Azerbaijan, the top priority is to increase financing for clean energy production in the countries with developing economies, the press statement says.

Birol said that the IEA continues expanding its efforts to support the COP Presidencies Troika, created to facilitate the succession process among COP28 in the UAE, COP29 in Azerbaijan and COP30 in Brazil.

Birol mentioned in an article on climate change published in the Financial Times that the recent events, including the global energy crisis, rising fuel prices and the impact of extreme weather conditions, are a reminder of why we need to move forward.

Although the changes made by governments are good for the energy transition, in some cases accelerating it and in other cases slowing it down, it will not change the main activity to combat the climate change.
